William (Bill) Charles Spann died January 7th in Roxboro, NC from the COVID-19 virus.
He was born June 23, 1934 in Ada, Oklahoma to the late James Orval Spann and Gladys Carter Spann.
After graduating from Duke University in 1956, Bill worked for Chemical Bank in New York while completing an MBA at New York University. Bill returned to North Carolina in 1960 and devoted his career to banking and accounting. He eventually returned to Durham, where he spent the rest of his life.
Bill lived with his son, Dale Shepherd, in Durham’s Northgate Park neighborhood, for many years. He was an enthusiastic raconteur of Durham history. In his retirement, he was an avid reader and enjoyed music, cooking, and gardening. Bill was a devoted member of All Saints United Episcopal Church in Hillsborough.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, his brother Neilson Spann, and former wife, Carolyn Hampton Spann. He is survived by his children Kathryn Spann, Vanessa Woodman, and Dale Shepherd; sisters Linda Collins, Susan Croley, Sally Shippey, and Melissa Rollins; and brothers James Spann and Robert Spann.
No service is planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Children’s Home Society of North Carolina or a charity of your choice.
