William Gilbert Wilson, 87, passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, after a brief illness. He was comforted by his family at his side.
Gilbert was the son of Emmette and Fonnie Wilson and was born in Oxford, NC. He is precededin death by his parents and his older brother, Marshall Wilson. Gilbert served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and later graduated from East Carolina University. There he also met the love of his life and wife, Ruth Jean Burchette. They were married in 1960 and had two children. Gilbert worked for the State of NC as a budget analyst and retired in 1986. He had a passion for working outside, including landscaping, carpentry, and any handyman type of activity. He enjoyed sports, hunting, going to Myrtle Beach, and playing golf, baseball, and softball. Gilbert was a wonderful husband and father and will be dearly missed by his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth of 61 years; his daughter, Carole Wilson of Madison, WI; his son, Gil Wilson, Jr. (Erinn), and four beautiful granddaughters, Emily, Caroline, Grace, and Clare of Cary; sisters-in-law, Dot Dickens of Fuquay-Varina and Gladys Wilson of Orlando, FL; and several nieces and nephews. The family especially thanks the Rex Hospital ICU doctors and nurses.
UPDATE DUE TO WEATHER: The service has been moved to Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Chapel, service at 11:00 am on Monday, January 3, 2022 and shall be officiated by Reverend Bruce Beck.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gilbert’s honor to West Oxford Baptist Church will be greatly appreciated.
