Wyatt Dale Cates, a beloved figure in the world of sign design and decal specialty, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, in Durham, North Carolina, with the grace of God surrounding him. Born on January 25, 1940, in Oxford, North Carolina, Dale dedicated his life to his craft, becoming known for his amazing designs that touched the hearts of many.

Dale was more than just a talented artist; he was a vibrant personality who brought laughter and joy to everyone around him. With a great sense of humor and an unmatched ability to joke, he had a unique way of making even the dullest days shine a little brighter. His love for Bojangles was as legendary as his warm spirit, and he enjoyed many a meal filled with laughter and stories shared with family and friends.

A humble man at heart, Dale found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved to piddle on his farm, where he often spent time nurturing his beloved cats. No matter how busy he became with work, he never missed a day visiting the farm, ensuring that his furry companions were well cared for and loved.

He is survived by his daughters, Julie Vasser (Edward) of Suffolk, VA and Kelly Staton (Jerry) of New Bern, NC; his grandchildren, Kelsey Vasser, Joseph Staton (Daria), Teri Staton and Jessica Staton; and his darling great grandchild, Nadia. He will be deeply missed by his loving sisters, Sandra Whitlow, Patricia Davis (Bobby) and Linda Piper (James); and his brother, Ron Cates (Lisa) and many extended family, friends, nieces, and nephews. who will forever cherish the memories they created together. Dale’s legacy will live on through the love he fostered in his community and the joy he brought to those lucky enough to know him.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Eugene and Maude Cates and his beloved wife, Flora "Flossie" W. Cates, as well as a younger brother E.F. Cates. His family, although separated by death, has found comfort in the beautiful memories shared with Dale.
